In the valley of the river Sagittario, perched on a spur looking on to a steep gorpe, there rises Scanno (1050 m. above sea-level), amid one of the most beautiful areas of L’Aquila province. The famous gorges of the Sagittario flowing down to Anversa with their wild beauty and with D’Annunzio memories, the mountain range whose queen is called Great Mountain, Mount Godi and the val di Corte Valley penetrating into Abruzzi’s National Park, the lake lying amid a green scenery and stretching out up to pleasant Villalago in this pictoresque setting, lies Scanno, the "oriental-flavoured small town" dear to the travel chronicles of the late 18th century’s writers.
